Uninstalling a Sign Attached with Adhesive

Signs installed with adhesive may seem impossible to remove. The good news is that it’s easier than you think with the right knowledge and tools.

Step 1: Detach the sign

Use a long piece of floss or fishing wire and place this behind the sign. Use a side-to-side motion with light pressure to detach the sign from the wall. Have patience, this may take a bit of time. See the video below.

Step 2: Remove residue

There will most likely be some residue left on your surface. Here’s how you can quickly remove it.

Apply a moderate amount of WD-40, Goo Gone or a mixture of warm water and lemon oil to the corner of a clean, dry towel or terry cloth. Fold the cloth over and gently buff the area containing the tape residue.

For residue on smooth, uncoated glass, a razor blade may be used to scrape the residue off.

Repeat this process until all of the VHB tape has been successfully removed.
